The new Community Response Helplines set up around the country to advise older and more vulnerable people during the COVID-19 crisis have received more 10,000 calls.
Galway East TD and Minister for Community Development Seán Canney said: “The helplines are already working well and offering a valuable service.
“They are operated by the Local Authorities’ Community Fora in conjunction with ALONE, the organisation which supports older people.
“The initiative is part of the Government’s Community Call initiative led by my department, the Department of Rural and Community Development.
“The helplines provide advice around the collection and delivery of groceries, fuel and medicines, social outreach services for those feeling isolated and who need to talk to other people and general inquiries about a variety of services, such as meals on wheels.
“The helplines can also advise on issues like hospital visits. Many people who would normally bring relatives, friends and neighbours to hospital are not now in a position to do so because of self-isolation or restrictions around movements by people over 70.
“The Ambulance Service has been offering alternative transport and the Army has been helping out but the helplines will advise on what is available.
“The ALONE Helpline is 0818-222024, while the Galway County Council Community Response helplines are 1800 928894 and 091 509390.
“The helplines will call people back if a follow up call is required. I would urge anyone seeking help or advice to call those numbers.”
