Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has said the issue of recognition for school secretaries must be resolved once and for all.
Minister Canney said: “Presently there are school secretaries who are not recognised as employees and are not benefiting from the same rights and entitlements afforded to public servants.
“This is grossly unfair. School secretaries are the engine of every school. Their role has increased enormously under the growing administrative burden placed on schools and the way in which they have to operate.
“All school secretaries should be paid sick leave and holiday entitlements. They should not be forced to sign on during holiday periods and they should have pension rights. Currently they have none.”
“I am calling on the Department of Education to expedite negotiations within the Workplace Relations Commission and bring this ongoing injustice to a conclusion.”
