Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has received confirmation that plans for the new 50-bed Tuam Community Nursing Unit are moving ahead despite a planning appeal to An Bord Pleanala.
An appeal was lodged after planning permission for the unit was granted last year. The outcome of the appeal is expected in March 2020.
Minister Canney said that in the meantime the Health Service Executive is preparing the site and advance works will be undertaken to install a water supply.
He added: “The HSE has also begun the procurement process and is inviting building contractors to pre-qualify to tender for the project.
“I expect that in the event of the appeal being rejected by An Bord Pleanala, we should see construction begin in the third quarter of 2020.”
“I want to acknowledge the generosity of the late Joe O’Toole, who donated €7 million towards the project.
“When completed, the CNU will provide a 50-bed care facility and a high-dependency unit. The new building will replace the Aras Mhuire building, which is no longer fit for purpose.”
