I attended an Oireachtas briefing this week by @ticktalkireland the patient support group for those suffering from Lyme Disease.
We heard from internationally renowned infectious diseases specialist Dr Joseph Jemsek and former Kerry footballer Anthony Morris, who has had to deal with the severely debilitating consequences of the disease.
Lyme is transmitted by ticks that bite into the skin. Ticks thrive in moist and humid environments, particularly woody or grassy areas.
The ticks can infect the body, sometimes with severe or fatal outcomes.
People can prevent tick bites by ensuring they are covered up when they are in risk areas.
Raising awareness about Lyme Disease is crucial.
