Old Library in Tuam needs second Planning Permission
I have been informed that the Department of Social Protection will lodge a revised Planning application with Galway County Council this week for the Old Library Shop Street Tuam.
The former library building on Shop Street is vacant for a number of years. Galway County Council are leasing the building to the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.
Planning Permission was previously achieved under the Part 8 process. However the Chief State Solicitors Office deemed this planning not appropriate in this instance.
‘This has necessitated the requirement to reapply for Planning Permission. Notices to this effect have been published in the papers this week.
‘The project consists of the fit-out of the building to accommodate new local office facilities for the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection over three stories.
‘The project has been delayed due to the Planning issue. The Planning will be in place in early 2019. The tender documents are all prepared and is expected to be re-tendered immediately following the receipt of the new Planning permission.
‘I am frustrated with the delay and I have worked tirelessly with all involved to get this project back on track.
‘It is important that we consolidate the office of the Department in one building in Tuam. It is also positive for Tuam to have a building of this stature and location re-opened to the public. I will continue to monitor progress to ensure a successful conclusion’.
