Minister Sean Canney Welcomes Opening of SUSI Grant Applications for 2025/26
Sean Canney TD, Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader of the Independent Group of Ministers, has welcomed the official opening of the SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) application process for the 2025/26 academic year.
SUSI is now accepting online applications for student grants, and Minister Canney is encouraging all eligible students and families to apply early to ensure timely processing and access to financial support for the upcoming academic year.
“SUSI continues to play a central role in supporting students in accessing further and higher education,” Minister Canney said. “The application process for the 2025/26 year is now open, and I encourage everyone who may be eligible to review the updated criteria and apply without delay.”
As part of Budget 2025, a number of positive changes have been introduced to the Student Grant Scheme to make it more accessible and responsive to student needs:
The Special Rate of maintenance grant threshold is increasing from €26,200 to €27,400.
Income thresholds for maintenance grants (for PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate students) will rise by 15%.
Income thresholds for the Student Contribution grant will also increase by 15%.
The Postgraduate Fee Contribution income threshold will go from €55,240 to €64,315.
The Part-time Undergraduate Fee grant threshold will increase from €55,924 to €64,315.
The first €5,000 of any scholarship or bursary will now be excluded from SUSI’s income calculations.
Students receiving a publicly funded scholarship listed as an exclusion under the scheme but which does not fully cover their tuition fees may now be eligible for a grant to cover the remaining balance.
Nationality criteria are being broadened to include:
Individuals granted residency under the Department of Justice’s Regularisation Scheme for Undocumented Migrants
Parents of Irish-born citizen children with permission to remain in the State
“These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting access and equity in education. I’m particularly pleased to see expanded eligibility and more generous income thresholds that will benefit many households,” Minister Canney added.
