Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports and Leader of the Independent Group of Ministers, Seán Canney TD is calling on households with medically vulnerable individuals to explore the SEAI Medically Vulnerable Solar PV System grant, a fully funded initiative designed to assist those dependent on electrically powered medical equipment. The scheme provides free solar panels to qualifying homes, reducing electricity costs and ensuring greater energy security for those most in need.
Under this initiative, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) is funding the installation of a 2kWp solar PV system in eligible homes. To qualify, a household must include a person registered under the life support category of the ESB Networks Priority Services Register as of November 22, 2022, and the property must have been built and occupied before December 31, 2020.
Minister Canney highlighted the importance of this scheme, stating:
“This is an invaluable opportunity for households with medically vulnerable individuals to benefit from free solar panel installation. It helps reduce energy costs and ensures a more stable power supply for those reliant on life-saving medical devices such as dialysis machines and respirators. These homes often have a higher energy demand than the average user, and this scheme directly supports them by providing a sustainable energy solution at no cost.”
“The Government’s commitment to fully funding this initiative ensures that the most vulnerable in our communities have access to renewable energy, improving both financial and energy security. I strongly encourage anyone who meets the criteria to engage with their energy provider and avail of this scheme.”
Eligible households will receive:
Five 400W solar panels
One string inverter
Full installation and commissioning
The scheme is fully funded by the Government of Ireland and SEAI but is managed by Ireland’s four main energy providers – Bord Gáis, Energia, SSE Airtricity, and Electric Ireland. Those with other electricity providers may need to switch to one of these suppliers to participate.
Your energy provider should contact you regarding the scheme if you are eligible. If your provider hasn’t contacted you, you can register via their website.
This initiative ensures that medically vulnerable individuals have access to reliable and sustainable energy, reducing their electricity bills and enhancing their quality of life.
