Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports and Leader of the Independent Group of Ministers, Seán Canney TD, has welcomed the allocation of €9,996,990 to Galway under the 2025 TII Grant Allocation to Local Authorities for National Roads.

“This investment is a strong vote of confidence in Galway’s infrastructure needs — with targeted improvements right across the county and city. From major realignment works to improved lighting and pedestrian safety, this funding will enhance travel and safety for all road users,” said Minister Canney.

Galway County Council will receive a total of €5,737,293 under Capital Investment – Protection and Renewal, supporting 29 projects across the county. The full list is as follows:

There is also provision within that funding for NRO Support totalling €1,655,145; Local Authority Support totalling €494,148, Pavement Renewals funding of €350,000 and €100,000 for the Safety Support Grant.

In addition, Galway County Council will receive:

  • €978,697 for Current Maintenance, covering protection and renewal, ordinary maintenance, route lighting, and winter services.

Galway City Council will receive:

  • €3,200,000 for Construction of New Roads, including:
    • €2,400,000 for the Galway City Bypass in preliminary expenditure
    • €800,000 for the Moycullen Bypass
  • €403,139 for Capital Investment – Protection and Renewal, including:
    • €250,000 for pedestrian and cyclist facilities at Browne Roundabout
    • €100,000 for improvement works on the N6 at Bóthar na dTreabh
    • €53,139 in Local Authority Support
  • €189,517 for Current Maintenance, including ordinary maintenance, lighting, and winter operations
Minister Canney concluded: “This allocation ensures that major and minor schemes alike are progressed in Galway — strengthening connectivity, road safety, and support for active travel.”
