Improvement works to realign and make safer the N67 between Kinvara and Ballinderreen are due to begin this month.
Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has received confirmation from Galway County Council that Phase Two of the €6 million project is to proceed.
Minister Canney said: “This is a very welcome news. The section of the road leading to Kinvara is notorious – it is in a poor state and no longer fit for purpose as traffic use increases.
“The realignment works will make the road safer but the road’s character will still be retained by re-building the stone walls which are such an attraction for the many tourists and tour buses that use it.
“I want to thank Galway County Council for its input and I want to acknowledge the co-operation of the landowners in bringing this project to fruition.
“The improvement to the road will be complemented by the proposed boardwalk between Dunguaire Castle and the village, which will greatly enhance the pedestrian and visitor experience for this unique and picturesque area.
“I am delighted that the boardwalk is being funded by my Department, the Department for Rural and Community Development, under the Rural Regeneration Fund. Nearly €125,000 was allocated to develop designs and bring forward the project to planning stage.”
