The long-awaited €3.4 million group water scheme for Kilrickle and Kilcooley has been approved by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy TD.
Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney said: “Minister Murphy approved funding for the Kilrickle Group Water Scheme and Kilcooley extension this morning (Friday May 29) so the project can now go to tender.
“The funding is €3,133,783 plus a local contribution of €299,464.
“The new group water scheme will connect 238 houses plus non-domestic, mostly agricultural connections.
“The Kilcooley network of 18 houses, including Kilcooley National School and other non-domestic connections, will be upgraded and connected to the new Kilrickle scheme.
“I am delighted that this final hurdle has been cleared after a lot of false dawns.
“This is a landmark day. The people of Kilrickle have been waiting for this for a long time. I took up the campaign when I was first elected to the Dáil in 2016 after the project had been left in abeyance for years.
“A water source has been provided by Cappataggle Group Water Scheme and everything is now in place in terms of the design and costings for the project.
Minister Murphy is very familiar with the task at hand, having met the local committee last year at my request.
“I acknowledge all those who have supported the scheme, including Galway County Council and the people of Cappataggle for offering to provide their water source. I also want to thank the people of Kilrickle for their patience.
“When completed, people living in the area will fulfill their right to a clean and safe supply of drinking water.”
