Approval has been given for advanced works on the Gort Lowlands Scheme to create an emergency access road in the village of Rinrush, where 12 families were left marooned in the floods of 2016.
Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney said he had been informed that funding had been made available to build a raised road above the flood line.
He added: “This is of enormous importance for the residents and will give reassurance to the families and farmers that they will not have to face the same trauma again. Family homes and farmyards were marooned in the flood for more than 50 days in 2016 and had no access in or out of the area.
“The advanced works are being carried out as a result of the surveys undertaken as part of the design of the overall Gort Lowlands Flood Relief Scheme, This design work is now nearing completion.
“I have been working closely with the Office of Public Works, Galway County Council, the South Galway Flood Relief Committee and the families affected and I want to acknowledge the work of all concerned in getting this funding put in place.”
