The Government has removed the fee for one-year driving licences for people with medical conditions who need to have their licence renewed annually.
This is a very positive initiative that will ease the financial burden for people whose licence has to be reviewed annually.
It is in line with my own belief that we should do more to help the most vulnerable in our society.
To ask people who may already be in a difficult situation to pay annually is not fair.
Currently the fee for the one-year licence is €25 compared with €55 for a ten-year licence and €35 for a three-year licence.
One-year licences are only issued to those in special cases where the applicant suffers from significant medical conditions and requires a reassessment of their fitness to drive on an annual basis.
