There is a full programme of events this Saturday July 20 to celebrate Portumna’s rich heritage and its link to Lough Derg.
Events for Crinniú include a conference entitled Portumna: A Celebration of People, Place and Heritage at the Irish Workhouse Centre, a specially-produced film by Portumna Castle called Lough Derg Stories and a visitors’ tour around the castle by herbalist Lisa Guinan.
The tour will include an introduction to wild medicinal herbs and a practical demonstration on how to make old-style herbal tonics, cough and cold medicines and herbal-infused oils.
The Heritage Boats Association will have a number of boats on display at the Castle Harbour and there will be marquees and displays on the green area nearby.
Attractions there will include arts, crafts and heritage demonstrations, music, information stands, meet the beekeeper and puppet shows.
The event is being supported by Galway County Council, Waterways Ireland, Portumna Castle (OPW) and the Irish Workhouse Centre.
It promises to be a great day out!
