Community organisations and groups should be aware that applications to Galway County Council under the Community Involvement in Roadworks Scheme are now open.
The scheme is designed to support residents and local groups who are interested in assisting the council in carrying out improvement works on local public roads.
This is a very useful scheme and I would urge all community organisations to consider this opportunity.
Improvement works to be carried out under this scheme must be on public roads and/or road margins and may include setback of boundaries to improve sight distance or to provide
passing areas.
Local residents may contribute by way of a financial contribution or dedicating land as follows:
– where the local community contribution is monetary only, a minimum contribution rate of 15% of the cost of the works will apply;
– where the local community contribution is dedicating land, a minimum value of 30% of the cost of the scheme will apply;
– where the local community contribution is a combination of monetary contribution and dedicating land, then the combined contribution must amount to a minimum of 30% of the value of
the works.
Eligible works include drainage, pavements, footpaths and general works such as verges, banks, field entrances and setting back boundaries to improve visibility at junctions and narrow road sections.
