Work is ongoing throughout county Galway by the Office of Public Works on channel cleaning and riverbank maintenance, according to East Galway TD Seán Canney.
‘OPW spends €15 million in channel cleaning annually and work is currently ongoing throughout the country on maintenance projects. In county Galway, a number of projects are underway during the summer months, aimed at preventing winter or flash flooding.
‘Ongoing maintenance is currently being carried out on the River Nanny in Tuam. This is an example of the ongoing work being carried out by OPW to ensure that all channels are clear and capable of taking off water in the event of a flood. I am in constant contact with OPW in relation to these works and there are many more examples of this type of work being carried out on an ongoing basis.
‘Work is also ongoing on channel cleaning on the Grange River and at Lisavalley. Work on riverbank protection is underway in Skehana and Ballydonnellan and maintenance work is underway on a number of OPW bridges throughout the county.
‘I will continue to raise issues of importance with the OPW and ensure that necessary maintenance work is carried out in advance of the winter months.’
