News that all children under 12 can have free admission to all OPW managed heritage sites was welcomed this week by East Galway TD Seán Canney.
The announcement was made by Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran that from July 1st all children have free admission to OPW managed heritage sites across the country.
‘This initiative will encourage young people to visit heritage sites and develop an interest in our past. Portumna Castle and Athenry Castle are two heritage sites that children in Galway East can visit for free this summer. The OPW also operates a ‘free school visits’ scheme nationally. The scheme is open to both primary and second level schools within Ireland.
‘I would like to encourage parents, guardians and school authorities to bring children to the sites. It will be a very rewarding experience and will also develop the interest in our heritage at an early age. Building an interest in our past will ensure that our children will learn to appreciate our heritage and help to protect it for the future,’ concluded Deputy Canney.
