The Government has announced increased funding for mountain rescue teams around Ireland.
Mountain Rescue Ireland (MRI), which includes ten rescue teams and the Search and Rescue Dogs Association among its members, will see its funding increased to a total of €250,000.
A grant of €60,000 will also be made available to MRI for eligible development projects.
Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney said: “These teams perform a great service to the nation and I am delighted that the Minister for Transport has increased their funding.
“MRI works in close co-operation with An Garda Siochana and the Irish Coast Guard and their services are required more and more with the increased popularity of hill walking.”
MRI, which is a voluntary organisation, welcomed the increase. Chairperson Jonathan Shields said the additional funding would help with the rising costs of insurance, training and infrastructure for the organisation.
MRI also works in close association with the Irish Cave and Rescue Organisation.
