A new applications process for the funding of greenways has been opened following the allocation of an additional €4.5 million from the Carbon Tax Fund.
Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney said: “This is an opportunity for greenways projects which were excluded from last year’s funding round because they were not shovel-ready.
“This new funding has been made available by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to help projects through the planning stage so that they will be ready when major funding for greenways becomes available.”
Minister Canney said the funding would also be used to support feasibility studies, environmental screening and detailed design work.
He added: “As Minister of State in the Department of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, I am delighted that greenways, which play such a major role in the promotion of tourism, biodiversity and healthy leisure activities, should benefit from a tax designed to cut our carbon emissions.
Last year €40 million was allocated to ten shovel-ready greenways projects. The next funding round for greenways construction projects will be for 2022-24.
