Surveys are being carried out on the Clarin River between Clarinbridge and Athenry in order to advance Galway County Council’s application for funding to alleviate flooding in Athenry.
Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney said: “Once the surveys are completed the next step is for the County Council to submit an application for funding to the Office of Public Works.
“This is very much welcome. Athenry was threatened with serious flooding last winter, which highlighted the urgency of the situation.
“I welcome the fact that some channel cleaning has been carried out at Grangeabbey and this has removed obstructions and improved water flow.
“I am also pleased that the County Council will carry out works in Barrack Street to remove a column on the bridge, which is an obstruction.
“Another welcome development is the allocation of €20,000 for works to upgrade the bridge at Ballyboggan in the 2020 roads programme.
“The works are being funded by the Department of Transport under the council’s Bridge Rehabilitation Scheme.
“I acknowledge the work of Cllr Gabe Cronnelly who has worked closely with me in bringing forward these projects.”
