Galway East TD and Minister of State for Rural and Community Development Seán Canney has announced an award of €15,377.75 in LEADER funding towards an initiative to encourage community groups to adopt a mile of roadway to be entered into the Golden Mile of Galway competition.
The Golden Mile is an annual competition for which communities adopt a mile of roadway which celebrates natural and built heritage, history and folklore.
Minister Canney said: “The application was promoted by the Galway Development Company at the Mellows Campus, Garrafraun West, Athenry. This very welcome funding will be used as part of a biodiversity initiative for community groups.
“LEADER funding represents an enormous opportunity for rural businesses and communities that are in need of investment.
“The scheme was specifically set up to help rural development and it is great to see it making such a difference to our local communities.
“I want to acknowledge the continuing efforts of Minister Michael Ring in delivering the LEADER programme to rural Ireland. I expect the momentum around funding to continue over the coming months.”
