I have called on the Minister for Transport and the National Transport Authority to immediately review the bus services operational from Loughrea and Gort to ensure that the service can meet the demand.
There is a growing demand for a bus service from third level students and workers going to Galway and Athlone. It is imperative that bus services are in place at the right times to meet this demand.
“It is also crucial that the route is serviced with bus stops and bus shelters to accommodate passengers. This is vital in a climate such as ours.
In Loughrea there is need for more bus stops along the main street from the GAA pitch right through to the Loughrea hotel. This is a stretch of 2 km within the town and is presently served by one bus stop located in the centre of the main street.
To entice people to use public transport instead of the car, we need to have a service that will meet the demands of commuters, have certainty on arrival time and give the passenger a good experience.
I have questioned the Minister on this issue, and I am awaiting a response from the National Transport Authority.”
