Minister of State Seán Canney T.D. has stated that any talk of pedestrianisation in the centre of Athenry needs careful consideration.
‘I have received many calls from Business people who fear that any attempt to change the bye laws about pedestrianisation of the town would have a serious negative impact on their business’
‘Athenry is a town that needs a master plan first to identify the needs and the problems with traffic in the town’
‘It is imperative that the next section of the ring road is put in place first. I am waiting for Galway County Council to submit their final plans to the Department of Transport for approval to proceed.
‘It is only then that we well have a true picture of the town traffic problems. It is then that we need to engage with the business people and residents to identify the issues and to find solutions.’
‘I would not favour any pedestrianisation without the masterplan and full consultation with the locals’.
