News that rural recreation projects throughout county Galway are to benefit from over €100,000 in funding as part of rural development funding announced this week has been warmly welcomed by Galway East TD Seán Canney.
‘The funding will allow the development of new recreational facilities and the promotion of existing facilities. Among the funding announced for county Galway is €60,000 for capital investment in the Hymany Way in the Clonbrock and Ahascragh areas and €46,286 in funding for Coillte-controlled trails.
‘A total of €1.3 million in funding is being allocated to Coillte for maintenance of current trails across the country. In county Galway, there will be upgrading of signage and surfaces at Castlegrove, cutting of vegetation along the Hymany Way and also in Monivea and Woodlawn. In Mountbellew, seating will be replaced and vegetation will be controlled while in Portumna Forest Park there will be a surface upgrade to inner multi-access loop walk and timber structures will also be upgraded.
‘It is vital that these important walking trails are properly maintained so that they can be accessed on a year round basis by walkers and those enjoying outdoor pursuits. I have been contacted in recent months by many community groups seeking to have Coillte-controlled trails in their local areas upgraded so that they can be better used and have had many discussions with Minister Michael Ring on this subject and I am glad to see that a wide variety of communities across East Galway are benefiting from this week’s funding announcement.’
