Galway County Council has approved a priority list of 29 projects under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) for roads that fall outside the county council’s jurisdiction.
The proposed allocations which now require a local contribution and supporting documentation before June 17 for the projects to proceed.
My Department, the Department of Rural and Community Development, allocated €856,959 for the Local Improvement Scheme this year.
The scheme is part of a vital series of funding schemes in support of Rural Ireland.
The LIS allows homes and farms on unadopted roads and boreens to receive the lion’s share of funding for improvements.
A small local contribution is required depending on the number of homes and farms involved.
There is also a supplementary list of proposals if any projects listed for priority are withdrawn or if additional funding becomes available.
I am pleased that we have been able to maintain funding at the same level as last year.
It will be imperative for any incoming Government that funding supports for Rural Ireland continue at the same level to redress regional inequalities and to invest in our infrastructure as the economy recovers post COVID-19.
