Rules for the operation of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) have been relaxed to ensure the continuation of the delivery and distribution of goods.
The Road Safety Authority and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport have agreed to further extend the relaxation of some European Union driving and resting time rules for HGV operators and drivers.
This is an important measure to ensure continuity of the supply chain, which is essential during the COVID-19 emergency.
The extension will apply to all HGV operators and drivers who are subject to the EU drivers’ hours and tachograph rules and who are engaged in the carriage of all goods, including oil and fuel supplies.
I am pleased that the RSA has been directly involved in this necessary decision. The rules apply from tomorrow (April 17) to May 31 and will be reviewed at the end of that period by the RSA.
