Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has welcomed €151,483 in funding to support Galway voluntary and community groups with their response efforts to the COVID-19 crisis.
The COVID-19 Emergency Fund totalling €2.5 million nationally will be distributed to Local Authorities to be made available to groups participating in the Community Call launched by the Government last week.
Minister Canney said: “This funding from my department, the Department of Rural and Community Development, will provide immediate support for community groups to cover the cost of their work.
“Local community and voluntary groups have risen to the challenge of helping significant numbers of vulnerable people but they are facing funding issues as a result of the crisis. I am delighted that we have responded to their needs so quickly.
“Galway County Council will receive €85,789 from the fund and Galway City Council will receive €65,694.
“Organisations delivering frontline services such as meals on wheels will be prioritised for support.”
Local authorities will be contacting groups participating in the Community Call with further details about the fund in the very near future.
