Local and national cancer care services need a proper funding basis to allow them to deliver more services to patients.
That is according to Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney.
Minister Canney said: “The services provided by organisations like Tuam Cancer Care, Gort Cancer Care, Cancer Care West and the hospice foundation are vital in our communities.
“They deliver services that the Health Service Executive has failed to deliver but they rely heavily on fund-raising, which is a time-consuming distraction from their core delivery to patients.
“They should be brought together under a national strategy with proper funding.
“These organisations provide services to both patients and families and they are often the key point of contact for advice and information.
“It is important that we continue to give them the support and resources they need to provide these essential services.”
