Gort urgently needs a second access road to the M18 Motorway to ease severe traffic congestion in the town.
That is according to Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney.
Minister Canney is calling on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to provide a second access to prevent the build up of traffic at peak times.
He said: “I am asking Galway County Council to propose a new traffic management plan for Gort to TII.
“The opening of the motorway has increased traffic volumes in the town. There are huge difficulties, particularly for the school traffic coming from Kilbeacanty at the Loughrea Road junction and for anyone trying to access the Lady Gregory Hotel.
“The lack of a second access road to the motorway is causing serious inconvenience for people trying to go about their business because the main street has become the sole access to the motorway from the south.
“I want TII to review the situation with a view to building a new link road to the M18. I am also asking for a new set of traffic lights with sensors to ease the traffic problem at the Loughrea Road junction.”
