I very much welcome the announcement of new funding under the CLÁR programme to support projects in rural areas that have suffered significant declines in population.
Details for this year’s programme were announced today by my departmental colleague Minister Michael Ring.
The programme will focus on safety measures near schools and community groups and play areas, including multi-use games areas.
Past funding for Galway projects have made a significant positive impact on our rural communities and I would urge all those in CLÁR areas seeking funding for safety and play areas to apply.
This year’s funding will include the creation of a Community Wellbeing Support measure, which will encompass the assistance given in previous years for voluntary first-response organisations and for mobility and cancer care supports.
The measure will also provide funding for the development of specialist sensory gardens and complementary play areas.
CLÁR is part of the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 Rural Regeneration Programme. Twenty three Galway projects were supported in 2018 with a total funding allocation of €811,764.
Projects funded included community facilities adjacent to national schools, community centres and sports fields. Transport projects like the new passenger bus for Cancer Care West were also supported.
