Portumna Castle is a major tourist attraction in Galway East
I have been in discussions with officials from the Office of Public Works on the future plans for further development of Portumna Castle.
‘Major efforts have been made over the last 3 years with the upgrade of the road leading to the Castle and the Marina. The new café shop and exhibition space has been opened and all of these are increasing visitor numbers.
‘The Office of Public Works have received planning permission for the development of carpark and bus park facilities and funding is now being sought for this project. This project will allow for increased capacity and will allow for buses to park safely close to the Castle.
‘Another major development planned is to provide a safe access to the first floor of the Castle. This project would provide access to the large hall on the first floor. It would facilitate large meetings and concerts. This project would provide facilities which will be of benefit to the Community and the Town. I am actively working with the O.P.W. to progress this project.
‘I have also had a meeting with Minister Josepha Madigan to encourage the Department of Heritage to purchase the Gate Lodge at Portumna Castle on behalf of the State. The Gate Lodge is strategic to the future development of Portumna Castle.
‘I will continue to promote Portumna as a tourist destination for the region. Portumna has many attractions for visitors and can be showcased as a place to visit for tourists worldwide under the Ireland Hidden Heartlands brand’.
